The sign-up form is well laid out, concise and contains very little ambiguity in what type of information you should enter. You begin by selecting the type of person you are seeking, the city you live closest to (or country, if outwith America), your Nickname and the community you wish to particpate in.

The 2nd section requires you to select features that describe yourself, including hair colour, height, education etc. You can also include a short profile about yourself, plus an optional section that lists what activities you enjoy, which may help in finding better matches.

The 3rd section offers you the chance to select the attributes of your 'dream' mate. A good feature here is that you can select 'no-preferences' or a combination of ideal attributes for each of the questions. The last section covers Secure Information, like your username, password, the city and country you live, and dob.

The Dreammates Site

With a welcoming feel, polished design and good navigation layout, I've personally found dreammates to be one of the most attractive dating services online (I've viewed hundreds of dating sites over the years).

Tip - as a free member you are allowed to upload one photo, so take dreammates advice since it means you're 9-times more likely to get a response. Premium members can upload 2 additional pictures.

There are several key areas of the site:

Searching - search 3 types of communites by city/state/country. You can perform either a fast search, refined search, username and mailbox searches. These will bring up screens listing matches, from which you can browse through and read more about them. The presentation of the results was top-notch here. I ran a whole series of searches and found the results to be generally quite fast and impressive. Browsing them is easy on the eye.

Message Center - essentially your mailbox, listing your contacts, favorites, and abilities to send messages, check for new ones and so on. Advice is also on offer from relationship adviser, Eve.

Sending a Message - There are 2 options, and this is where costs do come in. You can browse for Free, but to communicate, either person must buy a credit. Firstly, you could send a free message to the mate you are interested in and it would cost the recipient 1 credit to reply (All further messaging between you and that member is completely free). Secondly, you can send a paid message, costing 1 credit and the recipient can reply to you free.

Credits - It costs 1 credit to send a message to somebody (after that, all messages between the 2 people are Free). Buying 3 credits costs $7.46, 10 costs $14.96. So with 10 credits you could have instant messaging with 10 different potential dates. My advice is to spend a good bit of time reading as many profiles as you can before committing to buying credits. f you're serious about dating, then buying a 10-pack or the 25-pack of credits offers you best value for money.

Your Profile - view and edit your information and profile, update your 'search criteria' preferences

Communities - allows you to switch communites from dating, romance or intimate. Different types of people look for different things in relationships, so choose the one that suits you.

Messenger - a nifty fast loading tool that allows users to send messages to potential mates. When browsing profiles, it's good that they include a little icon beside the search results informing you if that person is currently online.

Premium Membership - allows faster message delivery, discounts on buying credits, 3 free credits, ability to add more photos. This costs 14.95 per month.

The only minor quibble I discovered was that with my own search criteria (ladies from 23 - 30) a few over 30's appeared in the results (not that there's anything wrong with ladies over 30 :-) ).

Dreammates Verdict

Dream mates is a highly professional and carefully designed dating service. It's excellent in that you can be up and running quickly, browsing the profiles for free. The features offered are varied and aesthetically pleasing on the eye, especially as you will spend a lot of time browsing profiles.

To start conversations with potential mates you have to decide how many credits you want to buy (or if the recipient is willing to use a credit), or indeed if premier membership is right for you. The costs are reasonable and you can save money by buying a larger quantity of credits.
